We are thrilled that this experience won Gold and Silver Awards from both The Academy of International Extended Reality “AIXR” VR Awards for Social Good and the inaugural Anthem Awards. The Inaugural Anthem Awards, the Webby Awards’ newest initiative, was developed to recognize the breadth of social good work (online and offline) around the globe by honoring the organizations, brands, and people creating long-lasting impact.

AVEnueS (Accenture Virtual Experience Services) provides a learning opportunity that is both experiential and reflective.  The experience starts in virtual reality where users are immersed in real-world scenarios and practice making tough decisions in stressful situations. The experience uses interactive voice-based scenarios (natural language processing “NLP” powered by Watson) to completely transform how caseworkers hone their data-gathering and decision-making skills.

AVEnueS combines immersive learning and NLP in a highly realistic experience. Users visit 13-year-old Tory and get the chance to observe and interact with his family. After their experience, they learned there were two families; each user was randomly sorted to view one or the other when they began. These families have the same name, wear the same clothes, live in the same house, and deliver the same lines.

There is a single difference: one family is black and the other is white.

Early use shows participants are more likely to behave empathetically to the white family and are more likely to find the black family angry or threatening. In post-experience seminars, users articulate specific actions they will take to increase race equity. We intended to allow participants to explore their inherent or learned racial bias, so they are aware of their tendencies when they are with real families and increase racial equity when involved in real scenarios.

As the Creative Lead I helped guide the team in building authentic, dynamic characters and conflicts with captivating backstories. I also lead the creative development of a complex, multiple-choice, or branched-narrative VR script, storyboards, and other materials to inform the direction and production of both a live-action and a 360° video content shoot. Post-production included collaborating with the production crew and Unity development crew on polishing the final creative experience in the headset.
